Sojourner #024: Into The Breach

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:5)

Series: From The Editor's Desk

“Our mission is to speak the truth to power. We send home that first rough draft of history. We can and do make a difference... The real difficulty is having enough faith in humanity to believe that enough people, be they government, military, or the man on the street, will care when your file reaches the printed page, the website, or the TV screen.” (Marie Colvin, Truth at All Costs)

Telling stories from the front - that is kind of the whole idea behind Sojourner Magazine. Albeit, most of the articles out right now fulfill a different purpose, but a necessary one all the same.

The stories that take you to the front lines of the war in Ukraine and to the ground in Uganda and to three or four other countries whose names I cannot even say for security reasons.. well, they haven't published yet. They will, in time.

Our ambition is not to glorify ourselves or to get rich or to grow the magazine's readership, no. May it never be. The singular aim behind Sojourner is to glorify the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords with our every effort. We do that namely by telling the truth, by telling the stories of the work that God is doing among the nations - whether He is mentioned by name or not.

Our job is to use our voices to speak about the things that are happening in this world, to stand up for what is good and right and true, to tell the story in hopes that someone might stand with us. To sit idly by as the literal and figurative wars rage around us, content so long as the violence does not touch our own lives, is to neglect our God given duty to love our neighbor. Choosing neutrality in the face of injustice, in our line of work, is just as evil as carrying it out ourselves.

We tell the story, and we do something about it. To borrow from Tolkien, "It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule..." (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King).

Wherever there is suffering or violence or oppression or darkness, there is hope. There is a light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. Wherever there are those who are hungry or thirsty or afflicted or cast down or defeated, there are those who will run headlong into the breach for the sake of the Gospel, so others might live.

Accordingly, so long as the light endures, there is a story to tell. Lord willing, we'll tell it, for as long as we can. Maybe someone will read it. Greater still, perhaps someone will read it and decide to do something about it - for His glory and for the good of many.
