Sojourner #050: Happy, Happy, Happy - Celebrating The Life Of Phil Robertson
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
Happy, Happy, Happy – Celebrating the Life of Phil Robertson
Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Robertson family and the beloved face of Duck Dynasty, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior on June 25, 2025. While grief marks the loss of this legendary figure, for those in Christ, it is tempered by the hope of the Gospel, and the assurance that our brother has exchanged his light and momentary affliction for an eternal weight of glory. As the Scriptures remind us, we do not grieve as those without hope, for we know that in Christ, "though he die, yet shall he live" (John 11:25).
Phil Robertson's life was a testament to the redemptive power of the Gospel. From his humble beginnings in the swamps of Louisiana to becoming a household name, his legacy is not one of worldly success, but of a life lived in dependence upon Christ the King. For many of us, he was not just the "Duck Commander," but a man who knelt in the dust at the foot of the cross and found his identity in the King of glory.
In his podcast, Unashamed, Phil often spoke with simple, straightforward wisdom, grounding his responses in Scripture. His love for the Word of God was evident in his habit of answering questions not with opinions, but by simply reading from the Bible, always pointing to the truth of Christ. "First birth gets you on the earth, second birth gets you off the earth - you must be born again," he would say, echoing the words of Jesus from John 3:3.
Though Phil's life story was marked by a football career, the founding of Duck Commander, and the success of his family's TV show, those who knew him best could testify to a deeper reality. Phil Robertson was a quiet man who feared the Lord and lived by the grace of God. His fame may have come through the business world and television, but his identity was firmly rooted in Christ alone.
As his son, Jase Robertson, shared: “My dad has gone to be with the Lord today! He will be missed but we know he is in good hands, and our family is good because God is very good! We will see him again!”
Indeed, we will. Phil Robertson has entered into the joy of his Master, where there is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore (Matthew 25:21, Psalm 16:11). He was a man marked not by worldly accomplishments, though he had many, but by his unwavering dependence upon Jesus Christ. From the swamps of Louisiana to international television screens, Phil remained the same, a sinner redeemed by the grace of God.
As we reflect on his life, let us be reminded of the hope we share as believers. Phil is no longer with us, but we take comfort in the knowledge that, through faith in Christ, we will see him again. Until that day, may we continue to proclaim Christ crucified, living lives that reflect the same humble dependence upon the Lord that Phil exemplified.
Phil Robertson’s passing is a moment for us to celebrate his life and legacy, but more importantly, to reflect on the eternal truth that those in Christ never truly die. In the words of the Apostle Paul, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).
That is a reality that made Phil happy, happy, happy. So take heart: We will see Phil again, and until then, let us press on, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every tribe, nation, and tongue.
