Sojourner #093: Pancakes And The Great Commission
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31, ESV)
Pancakes and the Great Commission
At first glance, a pancake breakfast may seem like a small thing. A stack of pancakes, a link of sausage, a cup of coffee, and a conversation across a folding table in a church fellowship hall. Yet within the life of the church, even ordinary moments like these can carry extraordinary purpose.
This Saturday, Southside Baptist Church in Southside, Alabama, will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser supporting the Honduras Baptist Dental Mission’s Carter/Hart Team, who will travel this summer to Intibucá, Honduras. And in a very real sense, even the eating of pancakes becomes part of the missional endeavor of the Church, by faith.
For just $5 per ticket, guests will be served pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee, and water, complete with syrup and butter, along with an opportunity to participate in a baked goods sale offering homemade treats. The meal itself is good, but the purpose behind it reaches far beyond the breakfast table.
Every ticket purchased helps equip a team preparing to serve communities in rural Honduras through medical and dental outreach.
In the mountainous region of Intibucá, many communities have limited access to consistent dental and medical care. The Carter/Hart Team will provide much-needed treatment, but their work does not stop with clinical care. Their mission is to serve people holistically, meeting physical needs while pointing to the hope found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
To that end, the team will carry with them Bibles, rice, beans, medicine, and construction supplies. These provisions will support local families and churches in practical ways. Food staples like rice and beans will help households facing food insecurity.
Medicines will aid those who struggle to obtain basic healthcare. Construction materials will assist local ministry efforts. And the distribution of Scripture in Spanish will place the Word of God directly into the hands of individuals and families.
This is why even a pancake breakfast matters.
The meal itself becomes a means of participation in gospel ministry. A few dollars given for breakfast helps place a Bible into a home, medicine into the hands of a clinic worker, or food onto the table of a family in need.
What happens in a church fellowship hall on a Saturday morning becomes part of a much larger story of Christian service and witness.
Supporters can also participate through $250 sponsorships, with sponsors’ names appearing on the back of the team’s mission shirts. These sponsors stand as partners in the mission, helping to make the work possible through generosity and encouragement.
The pattern is not new. Throughout Scripture, the mission of God often advances through the faithful participation of many people doing seemingly small things. The Apostle Paul regularly thanked churches who partnered with him in the gospel through their support, recognizing that their generosity shared in the fruit of the ministry.
In the same way, those who attend this Saturday’s breakfast are not simply buying pancakes. They are helping send servants of Christ to a place where both physical care and the message of God's salvation are urgently needed.
The Carter/Hart Team goes to Honduras because they love the people they will serve. Yet that love ultimately reflects a deeper one, the love of Christ that compels His church to carry the gospel to the nations.
So come hungry this Saturday to Southside Baptist Church. Enjoy pancakes, sausage, and fellowship. Support the mission through your attendance or a donation. And remember that sometimes the work of the Great Commission begins with something as ordinary, and as meaningful, as a shared meal, by faith in Christ alone.
